How do I play Minesweeper without guessing?

Minesweeper: No Guess Puzzle generates boards that are provably solvable by logic alone, so you never reach a 50/50 where two squares are equally likely and you have to flip a coin. The generator checks every board before you see it and discards any that would force a guess.

How it works

  1. Pick a size

Beginner 9x9 with 10 mines, Intermediate 16x16 with 40, or Expert 30x16 with 99. The original three. A custom size is there if you want one.

  2. Tap to open, hold to flag

A number tells you how many mines touch that square, counting diagonals. Tap an opened number with the right count of flags around it and the rest of its neighbours open at once.

  3. Deduce, do not gamble

Every board in No-Guess mode has a next safe move that follows from what is already on screen. If you cannot see it, the information is there and you have not found it yet. Three safe hints per game are available if you want one.

  4. Come back tomorrow

The Daily Challenge is the same board for everyone worldwide, one attempt, and it tracks a streak. Themes unlock as you win.

Common questions

What is a 50/50 in Minesweeper?

A position where the remaining information cannot tell you which of two squares holds the mine. Both are exactly as likely, no amount of thinking helps, and you lose half the time by pure chance. It usually appears late, after twenty minutes of correct deduction, which is what makes it so irritating. It is not a mistake you made. It is a property of the board you were dealt.

How does a no-guess board actually work?

The generator lays out a candidate board, then runs a solver against it that only uses deduction a human can follow. If the solver reaches a point where it must guess, the board is thrown away and another is generated. You only ever see boards that survived. This is done before the first tap, so it costs you no waiting during the game.

Is a no-guess board still real Minesweeper?

The rules are identical: same numbers, same flags, same chording, same three standard sizes. What changes is which boards are dealt to you, not how the game is played. Purists reasonably argue that risk under uncertainty is part of the original design, which is why Retro mode exists and uses unmodified random generation, guesses and all. Pick whichever argument you find convincing.

What are the standard board sizes?

Beginner is 9 by 9 with 10 mines, Intermediate is 16 by 16 with 40, and Expert is 30 by 16 with 99. These are the sizes the original game shipped with and the ones speedrun records are set on. There is also a custom size if you want something else.

Does it have ads?

There are rewarded ads you can choose to watch in exchange for a hint or an undo, and there are occasional full-screen ads between games. Buying the unlock removes advertising entirely. There is no ad before you can start playing.

Is it free?

The game is free to download and the boards, the daily challenge and the standard difficulties cost nothing. The paid unlock removes ads and opens Series mode, the statistics dashboard, unlimited hints and undo, and the full theme set. It is sold as a one-time purchase or a weekly subscription.
