Water Eject & Dust Remover

Water Eject & Dust Remover plays a pulsed low tone that shakes water out of the iPhone's bottom speaker, and its Dust mode shakes loose dust sitting on the speaker grille.

Hold the phone speaker-down and tap Start: 10 pulses play over 30 seconds. It works on the bottom speaker only, not on the earpiece, the microphone or the charging port.

How to use it

  1. Choose Water or Dust

The switch above the Start button picks the mode. The app remembers the last choice.

  2. Hold the phone speaker-down

The bottom speaker is the grille beside the charging port. Face it down so loosened drops fall away from the phone.

  3. Tap Start

Ten pulses play over 30 seconds. The screen shows the tone's frequency as it sweeps and counts down the seconds left.

  4. Read the receipt

It lists the pulses, the duration and the frequency range that played, and, with microphone access, the speaker level before and after.

How does Water Eject & Dust Remover get water out of an iPhone speaker?

Water Eject & Dust Remover plays a low tone through the iPhone's bottom speaker in 10 pulses over 30 seconds. Each pulse is a two-second sweep from 150 to 230 Hz followed by a one-second pause, so the run is pulsed rather than one continuous tone. The vibration shakes drops on the speaker grille loose, which is why the phone is held speaker-down. It is the same idea as the tones Apple Watch plays to push water out after a swim.

What does Dust mode do?

Dust mode plays a wider sweep, from 120 to 600 Hz, in the same pattern of 10 pulses over 30 seconds. The tone vibrates the bottom speaker grille to shake loose dust sitting on it, such as pocket dust. It does not reach dust inside the phone or in the charging port, and the app does not measure dust. Water and Dust share the same Start button.

Does it work on the earpiece, the microphone or the charging port?

No. Water Eject & Dust Remover plays through the iPhone's bottom speaker only, so the tone can move only that speaker's grille. The earpiece at the top of the screen, the microphones and the charging port get nothing from it, and they need time to dry. After two runs in Water mode, the app links to Apple's own advice for a wet iPhone.

How do I know if it worked?

With microphone access allowed and the volume all the way up, the app plays a one-second chime through the speaker just before the run and again right after it, and compares the two levels. The result is one of three sentences: Louder than before the run, About the same as before, or Quieter than before the run. The audio is never saved or sent. Without microphone access the run still plays, with no level line.

What if headphones or a Bluetooth speaker are connected?

The run does not start. The tone has to come out of the iPhone's own bottom speaker, so while headphones, AirPods, a Bluetooth speaker or AirPlay are connected, the app shows Disconnect headphones or speakers. It also reads the system volume and, below the top, asks you to Turn the volume all the way up. It never changes the volume itself, and the level check runs only at full volume.

What if the speaker still sounds muffled after two runs?

Two runs in a row is the limit the app sets. After the second run in Water mode, the button changes to How to dry and opens Apple's own support page for a wet iPhone, because the water that is left needs time to dry. After the second run in Dust mode, the app shows Both runs are done. Check the grille. A tone cannot dry the inside of a phone.

What can't Water Eject & Dust Remover do?

Water Eject & Dust Remover cannot dry the inside of a phone, repair a phone, or make an iPhone waterproof. It acts on the bottom speaker grille and nothing else, and it does not detect liquid inside the device. If an iPhone went under water, will not charge, or shows a liquid warning, follow Apple's guidance for a wet iPhone and contact Apple Support.

What does it cost, and do I need an account?

The first run is included, in either mode, with its level check. Every run after that needs one in-app purchase, made once through Apple, that unlocks unlimited runs in both modes. There is no subscription and nothing renews. No account or sign-up is needed, and Restore brings the purchase to another iPhone on the same Apple Account. The tone is generated on the iPhone itself, so a run needs no internet connection.
